Origin of the Amazons – Controversial History of the Themysciran Warriors

Origin of the Amazons

The Amazons were the very first group of supernatural beings created by DC Comics. Yet, we don’t see them very often in the scene. Even though they are some of the mightiest group of warriors in the entire universe, there are more to their origin that has not been talked about much. So, we are going to change that today!

Origin of the Amazons

The Amazons first appeared in All-Star Comics issue #8 in January of 1941. They were created by the iconic Willaim Moulton Marston and Harry G Peter.

The Amazons lived in safety in Themyscira and were secluded from the world dominated by men. The crazy part about it is that as long as they stay in Themyscira or Paradise Island, they don’t age.

The Amazons Pre

Depending on which continuity you are pulling them from, the Amazons were created by Aphrodite or they were created from clay by the Olympian Gods over 3000 years ago. They were created to serve as a messenger to the world in the name of peace and justice

As you can see, there have been several iterations of the Amazon’s origin, like when Goerge Perez reworked it following The Crisis on the Infinite Earths. The Origins were re-written after the DC’s New 52, and more notably the current version of the Amazons the DC Rebirth edition.

Despite the timeline, we will give each one of them a chance. So, let’s get on that plane and land in the magical world of Themyscira.

Pre Crisis Origin

Originally in pre-crisis continuity, the Amazons as we know them now, were a race of immortal superwoman that lived on the magical island of Themyscira, also called the Paradise Island. They were granted life by Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love.

The Amazons were also given a magic sphere by the Goddes of War, Athena. It’s the device that allows the Amazons to see men’s world from the present and the past, sometimes they could even see the future.

With the help of the Sphere, they were able to surpass the inventions of man-made civilization. So, not only the Amazons were stronger and smarter, their weapons were far more advanced and their weapons were way faster.

The strongest of Amazon women and most human-like of them was Princess Diana aka Wonder Woman. When Steve Trevor crash-landed on Themyscira, she fell in love and left her protective island and sisters, giving up her immortality to fight the forces of evil in men’s world.

Post Crisis Origin

When the post-crisis continuity hit with Crisis on the Infinite Earth in the mid-80s, the DC universe updated a lot of their character’s origin.

Here the Amazons were created by the Goddess Artemis from the souls of women who had died at the hands of men. They are given new and stronger bodies that were made of clay and transformed into flesh and blood.

During the Infinite Crisis event, Wonder Woman failed her mission on men’s world and the Athenian Gods decided to remove the Amazons from Themyscira only to be resurrected by Hippolyta.

The New 52 Origin

In the New 52, the history of the Amazons was revised once again. They were still a supernaturally strong women race that lived in Themyscira but DC added some controversial changes to their history and origin.

They added that the Amazons mated with men three times each century, in order to continue their lineage. How would they do that you ask?

They would get completely naked and raid ships to seduce the men on them, to have sex with them. But it gets better, once the deed was done, the men were killed to protect the island’s secrecy.

Nine months later, all the girls that were born were celebrated while all the boys were taken from their mothers.

Needless to say that this aspect of their origins was quite controversial and was reckoned and changed back to their previous origins for DC rebirth.

Final Words

That wraps up the origins of the amazons from the DC comics. As you can see its got some controversial elements to it, but it’s an excellent public safety announcement if you are a sailor. If you’re out at sea and you suddenly have a group of insanely attractive women appear out of nowhere and attempt to seduce you, RUN for your lives.

Anyway, let me know what you think of the Amazon’s origin. And did you knew they had this much history?
